How to Calculate the Number of Studs for a Wall
Calculating studs is one of the first steps in any framing project. The core formula is straightforward, but getting the count right means accounting for spacing, corners, openings, and waste — all handled automatically by the stud calculator above.
Studs = (Wall Length ft × 12 ÷ Spacing in) + 1
At 16″ OC: Studs = (Length × 0.75) + 1
At 24″ OC: Studs = (Length × 0.5) + 1
Add: +1 per corner · +4 per door · +4 per window · +10% waste
The "+1" accounts for the end stud every wall requires. Corners add at least one extra stud. Doors and windows need king studs and jack studs on each side of the opening.

Studs Per Linear Foot — Quick Reference

For a full room, calculate the total perimeter (2 × length + 2 × width) then apply the standard formula. Add 4 corner studs for a rectangular room plus any door and window studs. The room mode in the calculator above does this automatically.
Standard studs: (P ft × 12 ÷ Spacing) + 4 corners
Example — 12×12 room at 16 OC:
P = 2 × (12 + 12) = 48 ft
Studs = (48 × 0.75) + 4 = 40 → Order 44 (with 10% waste)

Studs = (Gable Width ft ÷ 2) × (12 ÷ Spacing) + 1

Stud Layout & Placement
Stud layout is about more than count — it's about where each stud lands so drywall, sheathing, and fixtures align correctly. The standard layout starts the first stud at 15.25″ from the corner, not 16″.

Each position = previous + 16″
First stud offset: 16″ − ¾″ (half of 1.5″ stud width) = 15¼″
24 OC layout: 23¼″ — 47¼″ — 71¼″ — 95¼″ ...
This offset ensures 4-foot drywall sheets always have their edges at the center of a stud rather than between studs. Starting at exactly 16″ leaves the first sheet's far edge at the face of a stud — no backing for the screw edge.
